The technical preservation workflows developed by preservation experts and practitioners in SCAPE involve activities such as format migration, feature extraction, validation, and comparison of digital items. A characteristic of these workflows is that they typically depend on a range of content-specific software packages which must be applied to the data. The lacking ability to dependably execute these workflows against large collections of content provides a fundamental problem and preservation risk that is tackled by the SCAPE platform. In this context, it is a key challenge to develop strategies for legacy application support. SCAPE work package 6 (Application Provisioning) has developed ToMaR, an application that provides a generic approach for utilizing existing applications in MapReduce environments, provides a competitive and efficient alternative to application reengineering.
